It is unlikely that Armenia will be able to combine participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) with the European Union (EU). This was stated by the ambassador-at-large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Rodion Miroshnik, speaking with reporters in the Armenian capital Yerevan on Wednesday.

According to him, Russia has always emphasized that it does not intend to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, including Armenia.

Miroshnik added that this is an independent decision, while drawing attention to a number of similar actions by some other countries.

“Ukraine has long included in its constitution the desire to join the European Union and NATO. To what extent has Ukraine made progress in this process? Therefore, I think that politicians should draw conclusions from certain analogies that will stem exclusively from the interests of the people of Armenia,” noted the ambassador-at-large  of the Russian MFA.

Miroshnik said that it is necessary to independently analyze the approaches on the basis of which certain decisions are made.

“Analyze to what extent Armenia is interested in moving towards the European Union, what economic prospects there are in this regard. Assess the markets in which Armenia is present, and what income it receives from this cooperation. You can hardly sit on two ‘chairs,’” he emphasized.

The Russian MFA official noted that Russia welcomes the development of relations with Armenia at all levels, including economic projects that are developing between Russia and Armenia. Moscow would like to deepen normal relations also within the framework of the CSTO, he added.

“The ‘door’ is open from the Russian side. Armenia’s leadership knows better what thoughts Armenia is guided by,” concluded Rodion Miroshnik.
