German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called Nagorno-Karabakh “Azerbaijani” after a social media post saying the region should belong to Armenia. Steinmeier made the announcement after personal talks with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev in Azerbaijan, according to Report.

“We have always said that this [i.e. Nagorno-Karabakh] is your [i.e. Azerbaijani] territory, and today we confirm this direct and clear position of Germany,” the German president said.

Also, he congratulated Azerbaijan and Armenia on agreeing on the text of a peace treaty.

Furthermore, Steinmeier called on Baku and Yerevan not to miss the opportunity and to sign the agreement as soon as possible.

“A very big step has been taken. I spoke with President Aliyev and expressed hope that soon we will be able to witness the signing of a peace treaty and that lasting peace will come. I have high hopes, and call on the [two] parties not to miss this opportunity—despite all the difficulties and challenges," the German president said.

In his view, the two parties must show political will to bring the process to a conclusion.

"I am confident that this will happen," Steinmeier added.
