Ukrainian authorities will send a delegation to the US later this week to negotiate the mining deal, Bloomberg reports.
What began as a deal for Kyiv to extract rare earth minerals for the US has effectively turned into a demand by US President Donald Trump’s administration to return wartime aid. Ukraine does not consider this right and wants to engage the US in economic projects to rebuild infrastructure.
A Ukrainian delegation will visit the US on Friday and Saturday, people familiar with the plan told Bloomberg. According to two officials, it will include deputy ministers of economy and justice, but not higher-level politicians, as the negotiations require technical advice. The Ukrainian foreign ministry confirmed that the visit will take place.
The Ukrainian government hopes to improve the terms of the aforesaid deal, as well as include commitments to increase American investment in infrastructure restoration.
