The Los Angeles and Glendale Unified School Districts will close schools Thursday in observance of Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, NBC Los Angeles reports.

In 2020, the Los Angeles Department of Education decided to close schools on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. Since the 2013/14 school year, students and teachers in the Glendale Unified School District have April 24 off.

A bill to establish Armenian Genocide Memorial Day as a state commemoration on April 24 was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2022.

To commemorate Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, a religious ceremony and flower laying will be held at 10 a.m. local time at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Montebello.

At noon, a “Our Future” rally organized by the Armenian Youth Federation will be held in front of the Turkish Consulate General in Beverly Hills.

A “Demand Justice” community rally will begin at Glendale City Hall at 5:30 pm. The Truth and Accountability League will hold an event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. local time at the Glendale Central Library auditorium to remember the victims of the Genocide and honor eight elected officials and community leaders for their public service, visionary leadership and unwavering empathy, organizers said.
