The speaker of the National Armenia, Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, has called the agreement with Azerbaijan on the border section at Kirants village a “huge victory.” He expressed his views on the matter, which has caused a negative reaction among the Armenian society, while speaking with reporters Monday.

Simonyan said that thanks to the delimitation of this section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, “we [i.e. Armenia] received one of the foundations of Armenia’s independence: a border recognized by both sides, where border guards are stationed and where it is safer than in areas where border delimitation has not been carried out.”

The Armenian NA speaker noted that the process is ongoing, the areas where it will continue are currently being discussed, but it will definitely end from the border with Georgia to the border with Iran. It will take place on the basis of the Almaty Declaration.

But Simonyan did not respond to the question as to why the aforesaid declaration did not become the basis for border delimitation with Georgia. According to him, technical issues are currently being discussed, but he did not provide details.

Simonyan did not elaborate in the same way when answering the question about the signing of the agreed text of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty, explaining that he “does not want to interfere in the process,” but the discussions were actively continuing.

And in response to the question about the talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the context of geopolitical processes, Alen Simonyan recalled that the two parties managed to independently agree on 17 points on the peace agreement, and expressed hope that they will be able to complete the process.
