According to the latest Democracy Perception Index of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, tariffs for the world and attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office were not without consequences for US President Donald Trump.

The perception of the US in the world has deteriorated significantly over the past year. Its global rating has dropped from +22 percent in 2024 to -5 percent in 2025, which is lower than China (+14 percent) and similar to Russia (-9 percent).

The percentage of countries where the US has a purely positive image has decreased from 76 percent to 45 percent over the same period.

Donald Trump is the most recognizable political leader in the world, with 85 percent of respondents saying they know who he is. Trump is followed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, at 81 percent, 63 percent have heard of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and 35 percent said they have heard of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

But when it comes to popularity, Trump has an almost universally negative popularity rating; in 82 percent of countries, Trump has a purely negative rating, much worse than Putin (61 percent) and Xi (44 percent).
