A presidential runoff election was held in Romania on Sunday.

As a result, capital Bucharest mayor and pro-European politician Nicusor Dan will become the new head of state, according to the official website of the Permanent Electoral Authority of the country.

The main contenders for the post were pro-Russian far-right candidate George Simion, and Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan.

After 100 percent of the ballots were counted, Nicusor Dan won, garnering 53.60 percent of the votes.

Simion received 46.40 percent of the votes.

After the polls closed at 9pm local time on Sunday, the overall voter turnout was 64.72 percent. This is 11 percent more than in the first round. A total of 9.99 million voters in Romania and another 1.64 million abroad voted in the runoff.

In the first round, however, the situation was different. George Simion had received 40.96 percent of the votes, while Nicusor Dan had garnered 20.99 percent. The far-right candidate was able to achieve this result thanks to the Romanian diaspora, which had given him more than 60 percent of the votes, while Dan—25 percent.
