After telephone talks with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that peace talks between the two warring countries will soon make progress, Fox News reports.

He believes in the sincerity of Russian President Vladimir Putin's desire to reach a peaceful agreement. Trump said that, in his opinion, Putin is tired of the war.

When asked whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was doing enough to help the peace process, Trump replied that it would be better talk about this in about two weeks because he can't say yes or no right now. Trump said Zelenskyy is a strong person, and it's not easy to deal with him. But Trump believes Zelenskyy wants to stop. Trump added that he could answer this question better in two or four weeks, and he hopes that the answer will be that Zelenskyy wants to solve this problem.

The US president reflected also on recently elected Pope Leo, stating that he would like to promote peace between Russia and Ukraine. Trump said that it would be great to hold peace talks in the Vatican.

Trump stated as well that he did not want to impose new sanctions on Russia for the time being so as not to harm the peace process, the BBC reports.

According to him, the conflict in Ukraine should have remain a European problem, the US should not intervene, and if there is no significant progress in the Ukrainian issue, the US will cede its role in the settlement to Europe. He assured that there will be no American soldiers in Ukraine. Trump said that he had a “red line” in his head as to when he would stop putting pressure on Russia and Ukraine, but he did not specify his statement.

The US president noted that he would consider the possibility of increasing arms supplies to Ukraine, and emphasized that the US had provided Ukraine with record amounts of money for a foreign country, indicating faith in the resolution of the conflict.
