Monday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of Armenia, on the agenda of which was the debates on the draft law on exemption from mandatory military service for a fee, was canceled.

Deputy chair of the committee, Armen Khachatryan, noted that the reason was that there were other urgent matters for discussion.

“Considering that we still have time to put this draft law to the committee session, we will put it to the committee session again after additional detailed discussions,” Khachatryan said, adding that they will announce the date and time of this session.

The aforesaid bill proposed to establish the possibility of performing mandatory military service in Armenia for less than the regular 24 months. Accordingly, in case of serving for 1 month, 20 million drams (approx. US$52,370) shall be paid to the state budget, and in case of serving for 6 months—15 million drams (approx. US$39,278).
