Today, on May 28, we celebrate the proclamation of the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1921), which survived war, genocide and empires, French ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies wrote on X.

“Long live the Republic, and long live free, sovereign and democratic Armenia,” he added.

Subsequently, the French diplomat made another post, noting: “Today, alongside the Armenian authorities, we commemorated the establishment of the First Republic of Armenia, made possible by the victory achieved in Sardarapat.”

The Armenian people celebrate First Republic Day anniversary on May 28. On this day in 1918, the Armenian statehood that had been disrupted for centuries was restored. In May of that year, Armenian regular forces and volunteers managed to win life-and-death battles against the Turkish invaders in Gharakilisa, Bash Aparan, and Sardarapat, stopping their advance and their desire to completely seize Armenia.
