Unidentified persons blew up an oil pipeline in eastern Colombia, causing an oil spill in the Caranal River, Cenit reports.

“Cenit, a subsidiary of the Ecopetrol group, reports that an emergency plan and containment mechanism have been activated for the Bicentenario oil pipeline due to a pressure drop near the village of Palmarito, near the municipality of Fortul, in the department of Arauca, due to a terrorist attack on its infrastructure by unidentified persons,” the statement said.

The military has been deployed to the area to ensure the safety of workers engaged in eliminating the consequences of the explosion. Residents have been advised not to use the water of the aforesaid river.

The Bicentenario pipeline was previously attacked in March. Colombian rebel group National Liberation Army (ELN) is active in the area.
