More than 40 people died, more than 6.3 thousand were injured in traffic accidents on the roads of Turkey during the five-day Eid al-Adha weekend. Ali Yerlikaya, head of the republic's Interior Ministry, said.

“During the Eid al-Adha holidays [June 5-9], there were 3,913 traffic accidents. In these accidents, unfortunately, 44 of our citizens died at the scene and 6,370 were injured,” the minister wrote in X. In half of the cases, speeding was the cause of death, he added.

Yerlikaya recalled that the traffic police put more speed measuring points than usual on the highways during the holidays. On many highways, radars were set up every 30-35 km. The Interior Minister said that there were no fatal accidents on highways with a speed limit of 140 km/h. However, two Turks died in an accident on a highway with a speed limit of 130 km/h.

The authorities in Turkey try to make the days of Eid al-Adha a holiday every year. At this time in the country there is a temporary migration of the population. Citizens leave en masse either to the provinces to their relatives or to resort areas. In this regard, the flow of cars on the roads increases many times, especially on the first and last days of the holiday. In recent years, the statistics on road accidents with fatalities and injuries during this period have continued to decline, also due to increased control measures on the part of the traffic police.
