Armenia's statements about the incompatibility of membership in both the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU) cannot be denied as realism. Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), stated this at Thursday’s press briefing.

"It is impossible to deny the realism here. It is really quite complicated. Let's comprehend in order. Armenia's possible membership in the European Union is really incompatible with the republic's [current] membership in the Eurasian Economic Union. It seems to me that this has been repeatedly voiced by the Russian side, with specific arguments," said the Russian MFA spox.

She emphasized that at this phase Armenia has not even received the status of a candidate for EU membership, and the accession process itself may drag on for decades. Moreover, according to Zakharova, the question remains open as to whether the European Union is truly interested in accepting Armenia, or whether it views the country as just a temporary geopolitical tool.
