This matter was raised during a phone conversation between the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan, and during that phone conversation, the Azerbaijani president assured that they would not allow their territory to be used against Iran. Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told this to reporters Tuesday—and referring to the reports that missiles were fired from Azerbaijani territory as well to Iranian territory.

“They [i.e. Azerbaijan] informed us [i.e. Iran] that they would not allow such a thing. Of course, we still do not have any official information that such a thing has happened. Therefore, we cannot express an official position based only on press speculation. Iran’s position [on the matter] was expressed yesterday by the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman. Our position is what was expressed yesterday by the foreign ministry spokesman,” said the Iranian ambassador to Armenia.

Regarding the fact that Azerbaijani had reacted very harshly to his statements made earlier, calling them absurd, Sobhani said: "Our foreign ministry spokesman responded yesterday. These are unfounded historical allegations that can become a cause for tension as well as question the territorial integrity of other countries; they are not correct. It is not possible to change geographical realities with such self-proclaimed allegations. My opinion is what I have said."

Earlier, the Iranian ambassador to Armenia had stated: "We have received information that a small number of drones flew into Iranian territory from the territory of neighboring countries. Therefore, during a telephone conversation between the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan, our president asked [Azerbaijani president] Aliyev to conduct a serious investigation in this regard. We will wait and see what the results of that investigation will be, after which we will make a decision on how to respond."

Also, the Iranian ambassador had emphasized that, "It is possible and probable that the enemy Zionist regime [i.e. Israel], made use of the territory of that neighboring country."

At the same time, he reminded that the Azerbaijani side had assured that it would not allow its territory to be used in that direction.

To the remark that Iran has a very strong intelligence in the region, and asked whether therefore it is possible that it did not notice that the attack came from Azerbaijan, the Iranian ambassador to Armenia replied: "It was precisely from our intelligence system that the Iranian side turned to Azerbaijan to conduct that investigation. We will wait for the statement of official sources.”
