Turkey is ready to open a consulate in Shushi or in any other city in Karabakh upon the decision of Azerbaijan, Turkish ambassador to Azerbaijan Birol Akgun said in an interview with the Azerbaijani APA news agency.

"We had an application in 2021 regarding the opening of a Turkish consulate in Shusha [i.e. Shushi]. However, no country has a consulate in Shusha yet. This is a decision that Azerbaijan will make within the framework of its sovereign rights. We [i.e. Turkey] are ready to open a consulate in Shusha or in any city in Karabakh upon the decision of Azerbaijan," the Turkish ambassador noted.

After the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh 2020, the Turkey has repeatedly announced its intention to open a consulate general in the Azerbaijani-occupied Armenian city of Shushi, but these statements have not been followed by practical steps. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also had announced plans to open Turkish consulate general in this city during the signing of the "Shushi Declaration" on June 15, 2021.
