Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees could soon be deported from the United States if they lose their temporary legal humanitarian status in the country, The Wall Street Journal reports.

About 120,000 Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the US over the past two years could gradually lose such legal protections in the coming days if the White House does not extend the program approved by the administration of former President Joe Biden, whereby these refugees were granted two-year renewable status in the US on the condition that they find a private American sponsor who will accept them.

About 250,000 Ukrainian refugees have entered the US under the Uniting for Ukraine program. Those who arrived before August 16, 2023, continue to be eligible for a separate Temporary Protected Status program. But about 120,000 Ukrainian refugees who arrived on or after that date could be considered illegal status once it expires.
