The matter of the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the territory of Armenia should be resolved as a result of border delimitation, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at a press briefing Thursday.

Pashinyan recalled that about 200 square kilometers of Armenian territory are currently occupied by Azerbaijan. He added, however, that some territories of Azerbaijan are under the control of Armenia.

“We have reached an agreement with Azerbaijan that we recognize each other’s territorial integrity, taking the borders of the former Soviet republics as a basis,” Pashinyan noted.

The premier emphasized that both Armenia and Azerbaijan have all the respective maps, and noted that the delimitation and demarcation of the Kirants-Voskepar border section was carried out on the basis of these maps.

“The further process should be carried out in accordance with these maps, and the issue should be resolved in this context. If there are intentions and wishes to carry out a proportional exchange of territories—that is, to exchange one square kilometer of territory for one square kilometer—then we need to turn to the people and find out whether they agree with this approach," the Armenian PM concluded.
