Mawlawi Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said the death toll has risen to at least 800 as a result of the earthquake, with 2,500 others injured, state-run Afghanistan Radio reported, according to Newsweek.
Those numbers are preliminary, he added, and could rise.
Rescue operations are ongoing.
