In August, hackers stole $163 million worth of cryptocurrency in 16 major attacks on crypto projects, RBC reports, citing analytics company PeckShield. For comparison, in July, the damage amounted to $142 million, which is 15% less.
The five largest incidents accounted for 99% of the stolen funds ($161 million). The biggest losses were suffered by an unknown Bitcoin owner who gave a fraudster the login details for their wallet, losing $91 million (783 BTC).
Second place goes to the Turkish crypto exchange BTCTurk, which has already suffered its second major hack: in mid-August, about $50 million was withdrawn from the platform, bringing the total damage from the attacks to $100 million.
Rounding out the top three in terms of losses are: OdinFun ($7 million), a platform for launching memecoins on the Bitcoin network; BetterBank.io ($5 million), a DeFi protocol; and CrediX Finance ($4.5 million), a credit service on the Solana network.
According to TRM Labs, in the first half of 2025, more than $2.1 billion was stolen as a result of at least 75 hacks and exploits, which is almost comparable to the total amount of cryptocurrency stolen in the whole of 2024.
