A protest was held in front of the Istanbul headquarters of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) after the leadership of the headquarters, including Ozgur Celik, was dismissed and its administration was transferred to a state-appointed temporary council.

Earlier, a lawsuit was filed in court regarding violations committed during the 2023 congress of CHP and voting that had elected the leadership of the headquarters.

On September 2, the court decided to annul the results of that congress, Turkish media report.

At the same time, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel called for the annulment of the court's decision to dismiss Celik and the rest of the party's Istanbul branch leadership.

The CHP headquarters building in Istanbul was blockaded. Clashes broke out between protesters and police, as protesters attempted to break through police barriers, and the police used force.

Istanbul authorities have announced a three-day ban on gatherings, demonstrations, press statements, and leaflet distribution in several districts of the city.
