The European Union does not plan to increase tariffs on China, despite Trump's demands, according to Le Monde.

“This does not mean that we should not take measures, but for now, there will be no excessive tariffs,” a European diplomat told the publication.

According to the source, Trump's demands create the impression that the US is ready to increase pressure on Russia, while the Europeans are not. 

The European official explained that the EU's goal is to impose tough sanctions on the Russian economy, targeting direct or indirect trade with Moscow, rather than “further weakening our own economy,” the BBC reports.

Another source added that Trump understands that he “cannot fight China alone and needs a united front with us.”

Brussels does not intend to impose tariffs on India, as this would not be in the interests of the European Union, a European official told Le Monde.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Reuters and Bloomberg that Washington would not impose additional tariffs on China to stop Beijing from buying Russian oil unless European countries imposed tough tariffs on China and India. 

“We expect the Europeans to do their part now, and we will not move forward without the Europeans,” he said.

Earlier, Donald Trump said that he would impose “massive sanctions” on Russia only if NATO member countries stopped buying Russian oil and imposed tariffs of 50-100% on China.
