After the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was initialed in Washington last month, we are entering a new historical period in the region—the South Caucasus, and in this regard, we deemed it appropriate to inform our Austrian colleagues and friends about the situation, the Azerbaijani president’s Special Representative for Special Assignments, Elchin Amirbekov, said in an interview with Austria Press Agentur - Austria Press Agency, APA reports.

Violating all arrangements, Amirbekov continued to posit additional demands to Armenia, stating that this is a "problem arising from the current constitution of Armenia."

"Namely, there are territorial claims regarding Nagorno-Karabakh in the preamble of the constitution," the Azerbaijani president's special representative stated.

"The peace agreement to be signed envisages the mutual renunciation of territorial claims," Amirbekov noted.

He, of course, did not address the question of whether Azerbaijan intends to amend its own constitution and dispose of its declaration of independence, which declares almost all of Armenia “Azerbaijani territory.”

Amirbekov stressed that there are great opportunities for long-term peace and stability in the region.

Elchin Amirbekov cited the construction of a 43-kilometer road and railway line which will pass through Armenian territory, connect the west of Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave, as an important step in this regard. 

“This is not only about the unification of two parts of Azerbaijan but also about the connection between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as between Asia and Europe,” he said. “This is a peace project that everyone in the region can benefit from, if there is political will.”
