The logic of "whoever has more money is right" that the opposition is guided by is demagogy. Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, told this to reporters Friday—and referring to the authorities' plans to reduce Armenia’s defense spending compared to the previous state budget of the country.

"In addition, it is not required to spend more; the main [thing] is to spend efficiently. It is one thing to spend more, another thing to spend efficiently and not steal. As for theft, let the opposition comment [on it]," Simonyan noted.

He stated that all decisions made and to be made by Armenia’s authorities concern the interests of the country.

"We [i.e. Armenia] will proceed from our interests. Perhaps there were mistakes in the past due to following stereotypes, but then our approach changed," he noted.

Simonyan stressed that the Armenian authorities had begun the process of constitutional amendments in 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic.

He assured that there were no demands from anyone, which Armenia took into account and based on which it made its decision.

“We are carrying out all decisions and reforms based on the interests of our country,” Simonyan reiterated.
