The opposition announces the need to hold snap parliamentary elections just four years after the previous parliamentary elections. Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, told this to reporters Friday.

Simonyan explained this by the reluctance of Armenia’s opposition, which “knows that it will lose [in the next parliamentary elections].”

“We can go to the elections tomorrow, but there is no need. Besides, the people [of Armenia] have delegated us for five years. The elections should be in favor of the people,” Simonyan added.

He claimed that snap elections now will not be the elections of the people of Armenia, but of the NA majority Civil Contract Faction, and he considered this unfair.

"I am confident that after the August 8 agreement [between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington DC] and the steps taken and to be taken before the elections, the [incumbent] authorities will get much more votes than in 2021," concluded the speaker of the Armenian parliament.
