We have expressed our support for the Crossroads of Peace project, according to which, all countries will be able to use the existing transport routes in the region, outgoing Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani said at his farewell press conference Friday.

“The reaction to this is clearly visible in the statement of August 8 [in Washington DC]. If we consider the matter on the principle of reciprocity, and [Azerbaijan’s] Nakhichevan [exclave] can establish a link with Azerbaijan, then reciprocally Armenia can establish a link with Iran through Yeraskh [village of Armenia], Julfa [city of Nakhichevan].

If Azerbaijanis can reach Azerbaijan by land through the territory of Armenia, the same reality will also be for the citizens of Armenia, and the citizen of Armenia will be able to go to Iran through Nakhichevan. If all countries can use the transport opportunities, it will be in everyone’s interests; therefore, no one will be against it.

But what is incomprehensible to us [i.e. Armenia] concerns the actions taken by the operator of that road. The details on this matter are not yet clear.

It is about the discussions that a joint company should be created, which will simultaneously attract investments. No details are clear about this. Only when it is clear can one give an assessment. These are questions to which there are no answers.

The risk will be in the event that part of that [Crossroads of Peace] project [of Armenia] is implemented, but the other part is not. That is, part of the roads will be used, the other part—not,” said the outgoing Iranian ambassador to Armenia.
