Spain has banned the transit of US aircraft or ships through the Spanish bases of Rota (Province of Cadiz) and Moron de la Frontera (Province of Sevilla) that transport weapons, ammunition, or military equipment for Israel, El Pais reports.
This applies to both ships that are heading directly to the Jewish state and those whose final destination is Israel after an intermediate stop.
Spain does not inspect US transport planes or ships that stop at its bases.
The Pentagon could hide the cargo carried by American ships. But, according to sources of El Pais, relations between the allies are based on trust, which would be seriously damaged if such a situation arose.
Madrid has taken a rather tough stance towards the Jewish state due to the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a decree imposing an arms embargo on Israel.
