The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) demands Azerbaijan to submit a report on the detention and health condition of the 23 Armenians being held in the prisons of the Azerbaijani capital Baku, and has set a respective deadline of November 4.

Attorney Siranush Sahakyan, the Armenian POWs’ legal representative at the ECtHR, told Azatutyun, the RFE/RL’s Armenian service, that back in July, Azerbaijan had petitioned the ECtHR with a request to waive the country’s obligation to submit a report. But after objections from the Armenian government and the aforesaid prisoners' representatives at the ECtHR, the latter rejected Azerbaijan's petition and obligated Baku to submit information about the Armenian prisoners.

The Armenians being held in Baku prisons have been in complete isolation for about three months, as no independent international organization has visited them since then. There is no new information about their detention, health, and psychological condition.

Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross had last visited these Armenian prisoners in June. This international organization has permanently terminated its activities in Baku as of today—and at the request of the Azerbaijani authorities.
