Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on Friday abdicated the throne as head of state in favor of his eldest son, Guillaume, AP reports.

Henri, 70, served the small duchy in the heart of Europe for 25 years, playing a largely symbolic role.

Guillaume, 43, will soon be crowned and then swear an oath to Luxembourg’s constitution before the 60 elected members of the Chamber of Deputies, the duchy’s parliament.

Members of the Dutch and Belgian royal families are expected to attend the ceremonies.

Later on Friday, the new Grand Duke will host a gala dinner for guests including French President Emmanuel Macron, and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Subsequently, Guillaume will tour the small nation and end with a Sunday Mass with Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich at the Catholic Notre-Dame de Luxembourg cathedral.
