The council of the enlarged Parakar community of Armenia on Tuesday elected Onik Hakhverdyan, representing the “Miasnutyun” (Unity) bloc, as the new mayor of the community. He received 12 votes.

Members from the “Civil Contract” and “National Progress” factions did not participate in the council session.

Following the murder of Parakar Mayor Valodya Grigoryan, the council was required to elect a new mayor from among its members. Grigoryan had been elected from the “Miasnutyun” bloc, which holds a majority in the council, so the candidate proposed by that faction had the greatest chance of being elected.

In the snap local elections held in March, “Miasnutyun” had won 12 seats in the Parakar council, “Civil Contract” had won 7 seats, and “National Progress” had won 2 seats. This means that even if “Civil Contract” and “National Progress” members do not attend the session, a quorum is still ensured.
