There is currently no mandatory law in Iran requiring the wearing of the hijab that must be strictly enforced, said Mohammad Reza Bahonar, Secretary General of the Front of Followers of the Line of the Imam and the Leader and a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council, Khabar Online reports.

“The current general position of the system is that the law mandating the wearing of the hijab is no longer mandatory. If you notice that this decision is being used to violate regulations or impose fines, you can report it by calling 110,” Bahonar said at a press conference.

Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in an interview with NBC News, had expressed opposition to mandatory wearing of the hijab.

“People have the right to choose,” Pezeshkian had said in response to a question about Mahsa Amini, whose death three years ago in police custody after being arrested by Iran's morality police for not wearing the hijab properly had sparked nationwide protests.
