European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that the Georgian government is not listening to its citizens and is unwilling to follow the European path.

Ahead of the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kos said that ministers would discuss the “concerning developments taking place in Georgia.”

“The Georgian population, through the last three elections, ongoing protests, and public opinion surveys, has shown that they want a European future, but not this government. It seems that the authorities are not listening to their own people and are unwilling to follow the European path. As you know, opposition figures are detained, and the voices of journalists and civil society organizations are being suppressed,” the commissioner said.

Kos added that those in power are contributing to the spread of disinformation against the EU in the country.

“Therefore, we condemn these false statements and denounce all attacks on European institutions, European organizations’ representatives, and our member states. We also call on the Georgian government to listen to its people, be inclusive, engage with civil society, and respect the desire to become part of Europe,” Marta Kos concluded.
