Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that, although both sides announced last week that the leaders would meet, full preparatory work for the summit has not yet started.

“The preparations for the summit have not fully begun. Of course, everyone is carrying out the instructions given by the presidents, but the full-scale ‘negotiations’ and teamwork necessary to prepare the appropriate conditions for the summit have not yet started. This will begin only now,” Peskov said on Monday morning, according to Interfax.

Trump and Putin agreed to meet in Budapest during a phone conversation on the eve of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. The White House chief expressed hope that the Budapest talks could lead to an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The two presidents also decided that consultations should take place between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ahead of their meeting. Neither Russia nor the U.S. has specified when the meeting in the Hungarian capital might take place.
