Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to hold a telephone conversation soon to discuss preparatory steps ahead of their leaders’ meeting.
The discussions between Lavrov and Rubio are to take place before a summit involving Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which may be held in Budapest. Putin and Trump agreed to the meeting last week during a phone call, which occurred on the eve of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
"The call is approaching. This matter, unlike a personal meeting, is at a more advanced stage of coordination," Ryabkov said in response to a reporter’s question, according to Interfax.
At the same time, Ryabkov stated that he has “absolutely no idea” where the personal meeting between Rubio and Lavrov might take place. “All of this is still under discussion,” the deputy minister added.
Russia and the U.S. have not disclosed when the meeting between Putin and Trump might occur.
