On October 20, the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia received information through continuous monitoring of mass media and social media that the situation in front of Gyumri City Hall remains highly tense, the Ombudsman’s office reported.

There have been publications alleging that disproportionate force was used against citizens, and a group of individuals was taken to police stations.

Following the Ombudsman’s instructions, a representative from the Shirak regional unit is visiting the relevant police station to assess on-site the protection of the rights of those deprived of their freedom.

Additionally, monitoring has revealed that the ongoing situation has disrupted the normal operation of several kindergartens in the community, affecting the right of children to preschool education.

The Human Rights Defender once again emphasizes that in this and any other process, the principle of the best interests of the child must be strictly upheld.

The Ombudsman is currently reviewing all available information to provide an appropriate response within the scope of their mandate.
