EU energy ministers have reached an agreement on a draft law that would allow the bloc’s 27 countries to impose restrictions on energy trade with Russia, the European Union Council announced, according to BBC. Currently, such restrictions are applied through sanction packages rather than legislation; they are extended every six months and require unanimous approval.

The new measure would require a qualified majority, enabling the EU to override vetoes from Hungary and Slovakia.

Once the regulation is adopted by the European Parliament, the EU will legally enshrine a full ban on purchasing both pipeline and liquefied natural gas from Russia, which will take effect on January 1, 2028.
