U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the start of construction for a new ballroom on the White House grounds. NBC News reports that a portion of the building is being demolished to make way for this project.

Work on demolishing part of the White House’s East Wing, as part of Trump’s plan, began on Monday, October 20. The administration initially informed the media, and the President soon publicly confirmed it.

“I am pleased to announce that construction has begun on a new, large, and beautiful ballroom on the White House grounds. The East Wing, which is completely separate from the White House, is being fully renovated in this process and will be more beautiful upon completion,” Trump wrote.

He added that for over 150 years, “every president has dreamed of a White House ballroom” for hosting gala receptions, state visits, and more.

“I am deeply honored to be the first president to finally carry out this long-overdue project without any cost to the American taxpayer,” the President emphasized.

He noted that the White House ballroom is being privately funded “by very generous patriots, major American companies, and, with the greatest humility, by you.”

“This ballroom will be a joyous place for generations to come,” Trump concluded.
