Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union, stated that he personally tested artificial intelligence to create legislation for the German government. In an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, he explained that he used modern information technologies to assist in drafting laws for federal agencies.

Merz emphasized that, in his view, using artificial intelligence to develop legislation is a sensible step given the rapid pace of technological advancement.

He noted that artificial intelligence can accelerate the drafting and analysis of complex legal documents, helping officials and legislators work more quickly and accurately. At the same time, it can help make the legislative process more transparent, as AI can suggest alternative formulations and even identify potential legal inconsistencies or ambiguities in texts.

Merz also expressed the opinion that Germany should more actively integrate artificial intelligence into its bureaucratic and legislative systems, which would improve the efficiency of public institutions. At the same time, he stressed the importance of transparency and expert involvement to evaluate the impact of such technologies on the development of legislative proposals.

He added that modern technologies, including AI, should be used not only to optimize officials’ work but also to strengthen the legal system, which he believes will improve the quality and timeliness of laws.

Merz’s initiative has sparked reactions within Germany’s political community. Some of his supporters welcomed the application of new technologies in public administration, while critics expressed concern about potential consequences and risks for democratic processes if artificial intelligence begins to exert too much influence on legislative drafting.
