U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday stated that the Department of Justice likely owes him compensation, following reports that he is seeking millions of dollars in reimbursement for previous investigations, AFP reports.

The New York Times reported that the president’s lawyers are seeking approximately $230 million in damages related to federal investigations that began before he was elected for his second term.

“That decision should have come to my desk. And it’s very strange to make a decision for which I’m paying myself,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the matter. “But I’ve been seriously harmed.”

Referring to the Department of Justice, Trump said, “They probably owe me a lot of money. If I get money from our country, I’ll do something good with it, like donate it to charity or give it to the White House.”

Trump has filed multiple lawsuits against media outlets and other organizations, accusing them of bias against him, and in some cases has secured substantial settlements.

He added that it is “possible” his legal team has filed a compensation claim.

“I don’t know the figures; I haven’t even spoken to them about it,” the president said.

A representative for Trump’s legal team did not directly confirm New York Times’s report but told AFP that the president “continues to fight against all the Democrat-led witch hunts.”

According to the team’s spokesperson, these include investigations into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the alleged conspiracy with Russia. However, a situation in which the U.S. president is seeking compensation from the very government he leads is “unprecedented in American history,” the New York Times notes, adding that it also raises a serious ethical conflict.
