Former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has admitted during questioning to receiving illegal income. The statement was made during a briefing by Emzar Gagnidze, head of the Anti-Corruption Agency under the State Security Service.

“Today, former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili was questioned at the Anti-Corruption Agency under the State Security Service. He is fully cooperating with the investigation and has confessed to receiving illegal income over several years,” Gagnidze said.

According to Gagnidze, the investigative body will decide in the coming days how to classify Garibashvili’s actions and what preventive measure to apply against him.

Earlier, the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office reported that searches had been conducted at the homes of Garibashvili, former head of the State Security Service Grigol Liluashvili, former Prosecutor General Otar Partskhaladze, and eight other individuals connected to them.

Later, the State Security Service announced that more than 7 million USD, 198 luxury items and watches, valuable paintings, thousands of pages of documents, 50 mobile phones, and 119 electronic devices had been seized from the former officials and their family members. The Prosecutor General’s Office later reported an additional seizure of 4 million USD.

In 2024, Garibashvili was replaced as Prime Minister by Irakli Kobakhidze. Garibashvili subsequently succeeded Kobakhidze as chairman of the ruling “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” party but announced his retirement from politics in April. He served as Georgia’s Prime Minister in 2013–2015 and again in 2021–2024. In addition, he has previously held the positions of Minister of Internal Affairs and Minister of Defense.
