According to the Lithuanian military, on Thursday two Russian military aircraft entered the airspace of NATO member Lithuania for about 18 seconds, Reuters reports.

Lithuanian sources stated that the two aircraft—a Su-30 fighter jet and an Il-78 refueling plane—were possibly conducting a training mission for aerial refueling when they flew over Lithuania at an altitude of 700 meters around 3:00 PM from the Kaliningrad region.

“This incident once again shows that Russia is acting like a terrorist state, ignoring international law and the security of neighboring countries,” Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė wrote on Facebook.

“Lithuania is safe. We take care together with our allies and will defend every centimeter of our country,” she added.

In response, Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon jets of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing, which patrol the area, were scrambled, the military reported. On September 19, three Russian military aircraft violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes. NATO scrambled jets to intercept them. Russia denied that its planes entered Estonia, claiming that Tallinn had no evidence to support the claim and was seeking to escalate tensions between East and West. Nine days ago, more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace. NATO jets shot down several of them, marking the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine that an alliance member fired at Russian assets.
