On the evening of October 25, the cargo ship Hai Li 5 sank off the coast of Guangzhou, China, after colliding with another vessel, according to Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority.

The incident occurred on October 25, at 20:00 Singapore time, in the waters near Guangzhou, China. A collision took place between the Singapore-flagged container ship Wan Hai A17 and the Chinese vessel Hai Li 5.

Following the incident, the Chinese ship sank. There were 15 crew members on board the Hai Li 5. Officials report that two of them remain missing, while the others have been rescued.

As for the Wan Hai A17, owned by Wan Hai Lines Ltd., its 23-member crew was unharmed, and the ship sustained no significant damage.

Chinese authorities are currently conducting search and rescue operations, involving several coast guard vessels and helicopters.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, with preliminary theories including navigational error or technical malfunction.

The Wan Hai A17 is temporarily docked to assist in the investigation.

Chinese media report that the area of the incident has been temporarily closed to navigation, and officials from Guangdong Province’s maritime administration and prosecutor’s office are investigating the incident.
