The meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights, and Democracy of the 12th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Eastern Partnership (Euronest) has started in Armenia’s National Assembly.

The session will conclude on Thursday.

Yesterday it became known that Georgia and Azerbaijan had declined to participate in this Euronest session.

The head of the Azerbaijani delegation to Euronest, Tahir Mirkishili, had stated that the documents and declarations of the European Parliament—which make up half of the activities of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA)—contradict Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He had added, however, that the decision was not related to the session being held in Armenia.

As for Georgia, chairman of the Georgian parliamentary committee on European Integration, Levan Makashvili, had written in a letter to the Euronest PA that the recent actions of the Euronest PA “raise serious concerns due to their inconsistency with the fundamental principles and objectives of the Assembly’s founding act and the joint declaration of the Prague Eastern Partnership Summit.” According to Makashvili, the multilateral dialogue that “was previously widely supported by the Assembly’s participants, unfortunately, now belongs to the past.”
