The investigative body has filed a motion with the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction of Armavir Province to detain 68-year-old Gevorg Nersisyan and his son Hambardzum Nersisyan, lawyer Ara Zohrabyan reported on Facebook.
“The [respective court] session will begin shortly. The investigative body and the prosecution made their decision and proceeded to initiate criminal prosecution against people based on the testimony of one individual. They did not take into account the testimonies of the Nersisyans and the video,” Zohrabyan added.
Gevorg Nersisyan is the brother and Hambardzum Nersisyan is the nephew of the Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II. They were arrested Sunday in Vagharshapat city—and based on a statement by Harutyun Mkrtchyan, the mayoral candidate of the Republic Party, who alleged that Gevorg and Hambardzum Nersisyan had attempted to obstruct his election campaign, which, according to lawyer Ara Zohrabyan, is a false accusation.
As reported earlier, according to the Investigative Committee of Armenia, during the investigation of the criminal case, public criminal prosecution was initiated against two individuals—and under Article 211 of the Criminal Code: forcing someone to carry out or refrain from carrying out propaganda, or otherwise obstructing the conduct of propaganda.
