Over the past five years, Azerbaijan has constantly been thinking about how to ensure an unobstructed connection between the main part of the country and its Nakhchivan exclave. Rusif Huseynov,  the Co-founder and Director of Topchubashov Center, a Baku-based think tank, told this to reporters Tuesday during the international Orbeli Forum being held in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

“If I understand correctly, the main negotiation process is taking place between Armenia and the United States. They concern the status, format, and other aspects of Armenia’s southern regions. Nevertheless, considering the sensitivity of this issue in both societies, Azerbaijan’s position remains unchanged regarding to have a quick and unobstructed passage [to and from Nakhchivan],” said Huseynov.

The Azerbaijani analyst noted that the main goal is for the residents of Nakhchivan to benefit, since “for the past 40 years they have effectively been cut off from many advantages.”

“There is a consensus in Azerbaijan: the people living in Nakhchivan deserve to see the benefits of achieving peace [with Armenia],” said the director of the aforesaid Baku-based think tank.
