Constitutional amendment is Armenia’s internal affair. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Wednesday stated this during the international Orbeli Forum being held in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

The question in that regard was raised by a member of an Azerbaijani media outlet and was phrased in the spirit of “when will the amendment take place?”

In response, the Mirzoyan, welcoming the reporter’s presence from Baku, expressed sincere surprise at the “template nature” of the question. “If I were in your place, I would take the opportunity and ask a less mocking question,” the Armenian FM remarked.

Nevertheless, since the question was asked, Mirzoyan responded to it. He recalled that the topic has been repeatedly raised by Azerbaijani officials and that Yerevan’s response has not changed: it is Armenia’s internal affair. “We do not share the opinion that the constitutions of Armenia and Azerbaijan — moreover, the latter of which contains threats toward Armenia — are a subject for negotiation.”

According to the Armenian FM, peace is established between Armenia and Azerbaijan and there is understanding on key issues. But there are also other matters on which there is no agreement. “What to do? Azerbaijan says that ‘As long as this is the case, we won’t sign the peace treaty.’ We say, ‘You’re doing that in vain,” the Armenian FM recapped in a few words.

He emphasized that despite this, the aforesaid peace treaty has been initialed, the major goal has essentially been achieved, the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan are enjoying peace, and there is hope that future processes will lead to its signing. “The Republic of Armenia has the will for that, we are going in that direction and do not yield to provocations,” the FM noted, and recalled that since late 2018, the Armenian authorities have spoken about their intention to amend the constitution of Armenia, but that is a domestic political agenda.
