A new era is now opening. The railway route between Russia and Armenia has been unblocked, and within the next few hours, 15 wagons loaded with Russian grain will arrive in Georgia from Azerbaijan, after which they will be transported to Armenia. Aleksey Melnikov, General Director of the South Caucasus Railway company, announced this on Wednesday.

“Yes, the grain is coming, yes, it will already appear on the territory of Armenia in the very near future,” Melnikov said.

He stated that Kazakh grain will reach Azerbaijan’s territory from Russia today and will be delivered to Armenia within the next few days. “We are certainly looking forward to this event. For us, railway workers, it is a very important development that now we have the opportunity to deliver cargo from Kazakhstan, Russia, and other countries to Armenia — even to the extent that we can now carry out container train shipments from China,” Melnikov added.

He expressed confidence that this route will be in demand, adding that in the future, more freight trains will be sent by rail. Melnikov noted that this will ease congestion at Upper Lars motorway between Russia and Georgia and reduce the costs of transporting goods along the rather expensive Black Sea maritime route.

“This is a very important route for our partners who import grain and oil products to Armenia. It will be in demand among our partners,” concluded the general director of the South Caucasus Railway company.
