The European Union (EU) is firmly determined to make the Trans-Caspian transport route, also known as the Middle Corridor, a reliable long-term alternative to the Northern Route, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos told Azerbaijani media.

The Middle Corridor brings geopolitical and economic benefits to all the countries along its route, consisting of an interconnected system of railways and ports that link China, Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and the Black Sea to Europe, the EU commissioner said.

According to her, the amount of cargo being transported through the Middle Corridor has already quadrupled since 2022. By 2030 it could triple if investments are properly directed toward increasing its capacity and eliminating bottlenecks. Investments in transport infrastructure create more opportunities for digital and energy connectivity and reduce the risk of blackmail, Kos noted.
