One of the most problematic points of the initial US plan to stop the war in Ukraine was the condition that Kyiv must officially renounce its aspiration for NATO membership, which was enshrined in the country’s constitution.

A CNN source claims that during the Sunday meeting held in Florida, representatives of Ukraine and the US discussed a possible scenario in which the restriction renouncing NATO membership would be agreed upon directly between NATO member states and Moscow, without Kyiv’s participation.

Ukraine will not be forced to officially and legally abandon this aspiration, the CNN interlocutor said.

If the US has any bilateral agreement with Russia, or if Russia wants to receive certain guarantees from NATO on a multilateral basis, that does not mean involving Ukraine in the respective decision-making process, the source added.

The CNN source emphasized that no final decision has yet been made regarding the extremely delicate compromise, and it must ultimately be agreed upon with the president of Ukraine.

All this indicates that creative solutions are being explored to bypass Kyiv’s red lines ahead of the continuation of US-Ukraine negotiations and the planned visit to Moscow by US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, CNN comments.

The other red line is the Kremlin’s demand that the entire territory of Donbas be ceded to Russia. The aforesaid source directly familiar with the negotiation process told CNN that discussions on that issue are ongoing.
