Russian President Vladimir Putin received US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, at the Kremlin Tuesday. The meeting lasted about five hours, and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov commented on the results, Kommersant reports.

Accordingly, Putin’s meeting with the aforesaid American representatives was very useful, constructive, and informative, and lasted “not five minutes but five hours,” Ushakov said.

According to him, the conversation began with US President Trump’s representatives conveying “greetings and good wishes” to Vladimir Putin. And the Russian president conveyed to Trump “not only friendly greetings,” but also “a number of important political signals noted by his interlocutors,” the Russian presidential aide emphasized.

He noted that the main topic of discussion was the long-term peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. The sides discussed the essence of the American proposals previously presented to Moscow rather than specific wording.

As per Ushakov, the Russian president expressed both agreement with some points and criticism as well as opposition to several other US proposals.

Nevertheless, no compromise has yet been reached on the key issues.

The Russian presidential aide stated that the discussion focused particularly on territorial questions, without which Russia does not see a solution to the crisis. Some American proposals on this matter were deemed potentially acceptable.

Also, Ushakov noted that the prospects for economic cooperation between Russia and the US were discussed, but added that their implementation requires genuine commitment from both sides.

At the outset, the US presented a document consisting of 27 points. It was later revised and presented as four separate settlement documents, which were discussed during the meeting, Ushakov added.

The parties agreed not to disclose the substance of the negotiations. The talks were entirely closed and confidential. The negotiators agreed to continue contacts at the level of representatives and aides. A possible meeting at the presidential level will depend on progress achieved at that level.

The Russian president gave a negative assessment of the Europeans’ “unconstructive actions” in the context of the settlement.
