Several American security experts told Reuters that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy’s proposal to renounce NATO membership bid is unlikely to have a significant impact on the peace talks.

During a meeting with US envoys in Berlin, Zelenskyy had stated his readiness to give up NATO membership for Ukraine in exchange for other security guarantees for his country from the US and Europe.

However, Justin Logan of the Cato Institute and Andrew Michta of the University of Florida considered this proposal unchanged, since membership in NATO has long been unrealistic for Kyiv.

It changes nothing. It is an attempt to appear reasonable, said Justin Logan, director of defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute.
